Why do we need independent institutions, and how should they work for the long term?

The decisions that we make today will impact the generations of the future. Short-term profits, vested private interest and even regulatory capture often guide policy-making. Exemplary legislation from all corners of the world shows however, that the needs of future generations can be incorporated into today’s policy-making, creating more resilient and equal societies, now and in the future.

This conference, co-organised by the Oxford Martin Programme on Human Rights for Future Generations, the World Future Council, the Office of the Commissioner for Sustainable Futures, the Welsh Government, and Sustain Wales brings together a global community of institutions serving to safeguard the needs of future generations. The programme will showcase innovative and forward-looking policy-making, emphasising the practical and pragmatic approaches that are being taken around the world to address short-termism.

The conference will help to draw attention to and inform processes underway at the international level to establish a representative for future generations. High-lighting aspects of the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Bill, which is currently being scrutinised by the National Assembly for Wales, will help frame discussions.
