Recent events in America, Europe, and elsewhere threaten to unravel the international institutions that have managed global security and commerce since the end of World War II. Also under assault is the very principle of multilateral international governance that is so ensconced in our understanding of world affairs that it has come to be seen as the “null hypothesis” in international relations.

But is the abandonment of multilateralism all that bad? Can we imagine a more secure and prosperous world when international affairs are managed on a deal-by-deal basis between relevant national players?

Join us for a debate on these questions.

Dr Carlos Lopes, visiting fellow at the Oxford Martin School, and Achim Steiner, Director of the Oxford Martin School, will make the case for multilateralism.

Professor Karthik Ramanna, Director of the Oxford MPP, and Professor Ngaire Woods, Dean of the Blavatnik School, will argue for the alternative deal-by-deal approach.
