What are we doing?
We are identifying the ethical issues involved in current and near-future scientific advances in emerging sciences, such as stem cell science, cloning, artificial reproduction and new genetics. We also contribute to public understanding and policy making by working with government, research funding bodies and regulatory authorities.
Why is it important?
Emerging sciences are raising profound ethical questions we have not dealt with before. The world’s decision makers need to know if, how and under what circumstances we should place limits on research, development and use of emerging sciences.
How are we different?
Our team includes experts in medicine, philosophy, practical ethics, sociology and psychology. We are collating relevant evidence from interdisciplinary perspectives and applying philosophical methodology to analyse a range of ethical issues. Our research plays an important role in making recommendations for possible courses of action.
