John McDonnell thinks the chance of a robot stealing your job is so high we need a universal basic income – but he’s wrong


The shadow Chancellor John McDonnell this week has cited workplace automation as a reason why his party is looking closely at a Universal Basic Income. This follows a 2013 Oxford Martin School study from Carl Frey and Michael Osborne, suggesting 47 per cent of jobs in the US economy are at risk of automation.
