The Oxford Martin School is sad to learn of the death of Professor Stephen Castles.
Stephen co-founded the International Migration Institute (IMI), one of the very first research groups established by the School. The IMI was a collaboration between the directors of two major migration research centres in Oxford, the Refugee Studies Centre (RSC), directed by Stephen and COMPAS, then led by Professor Steven Vertovec.
Stephen became the IMI’s first director, leading the institute in developing a unique research agenda and it is now a global hub of migration research at the University of Amsterdam. Beyond his academic excellence and towering intellect, Stephen was a much liked colleague and is remembered fondly by his fellow directors of the School’s earliest programmes.
Two of those who collaborated with him at the Oxford Martin School, Dr Oliver Bakewell and Professor Hein de Haas, have written a tribute to him.
