People Professor Derrick Gosselin

Derrick Gosselin is Professor of International Strategy and Futures Thinking, and Founder-Director of the Institute for Futures Research at Ghent University. His pioneering work focuses on decision-making in complex and uncertain environments with substantive long-term consequences, applied to strategy, technology marketing, innovation and intelligence (Futures Thinking).
Professor Gosselin is an elected Fellow of the Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences (KVAB) and of Academia Europaea (AE).
He is appointed by Royal Order Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Belgian Nuclear Sciences Research Institute SCK.CEN and Governor of the Royal Higher Institute for Defense (Belgium). He is also pro Vice Chairman of NATO’s research center The Von Karman Institute (VKI) and Chairman of the European Corporate Security Association (ECSA). He is Special Advisor for Brexit & EU Affairs at CANZUK International. He is as well Associate Fellow at Green Templeton College (Oxford).
He was a member of the Global Agenda Councils at the World Economic Forum (2008-2014), an Associate Fellow at the Oxford Martin School's Institute for Science, Innovation and Society INSIS (2006-2010) and Government Commissioner at the Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology (2009-2012) (Belgium).
Previously he served as Cabinet Office Secretary & Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of the Government of Flanders. Earlier in his career, he held international senior executive positions in the ICT and the energy industry (1990-2009). Between 2004 and 2016 he held an academic appointment at the Belgian Royal Military Academy (RMA).
He holds an M.Sc. in control engineering, an M.Sc. in electrical engineering and a D.Phil. in economic sciences from Ghent University. He received his M.B.A. in technology management from the Vlerick Business School and holds an M.A. in international politics and defense sciences from the Royal Higher Institute for Defense. He is an alumnus of the London Business School, INSEAD and the University of Oxford. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET).
Prof. Gosselin has received wide recognition for his contributions to economic development and research, including having been knighted by the French Government and nominated Grant Officer in the Order of the Crown by H.M. King Philip of Belgium.
