Sophie's main research interests relate to decision-making over natural resources in contexts of social and environmental change. She is interested in the interfaces of natural and social sciences, and of research and policy-making processes. To date her research has explored perceptions of the environment, access to and use of ecological resources, and changing livelihoods in Central America (particularly southern Belize). Her topics of study have included decision-making and the politics of knowledge in socioeconomic development and resource management projects (e.g. electricity provision, community forestry), and the social meanings and impacts of infrastructure planning and implementation.
