To understand how we relate to taste and nutrition remains a major quest of our times. I am interested in how neural circuits in the brain encode nutrients, such as sugars and amino acids and how, depending on specific nutrient-deficiency states, these circuits direct an organism to an appropriate food source. I also seek a neural circuit-level understanding of how the brain assigns aversive value to bitter taste so that the animal avoids ingestion of toxic food.
