Professor Hankin joined Imperial in 1984 and was promoted to a chair in 1995.  He is Director of the Institute for Security Science and Technology.  He has previously been Dean of City and Guilds College (2000-2003), Pro Rector for Research (2004-2006) and Deputy Principal of Engineering (2006-2008).  His research is in theoretical computer science and language based security.  He has published about 90 conference and journal papers and 3 textbooks.  He leads multidisciplinary projects focussed on developing advanced visual analytics and providing better decision support to defend against cyber attacks.  He is also a partner in the UK Visual Analytics Consortium (UKVAC) which is co-funded by the UK Government and US Department of Homeland Security.  He was chair of the Lead Expert Group for the Government Office of Science’s Policy Futures Foresight report on Future Identities.  He is President of the Scientific Council of INRIA, the French national institute for research in computer science and control, and Vice Chair of the DG CONNECT Advisory Forum for the European Commission.
