Dr Gary Powney

Postdoctoral Researcher

Powney’s research focuses on analysing large-scale, long-term datasets to gain insight into the key processes that drive biodiversity loss.

He is currently developing HESTIA (Harmonized Environmental Storage and Tracking of the Impacts of Agriculture), an open access platform that allows researchers and producers across the agricultural supply-chain to store data on the environmental impacts of products and practices in a highly structured and standardised way. By allowing producers and consumers to assess and track the environmental impact of products and practices, HESTIA will build the foundations for creating sustainable food supply-chains and help to drive positive environmental action.

Powney completed his PhD at Imperial College London and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, where he examined environmental drivers of species distribution change.
