Dr Yiorgos Vittis

Postdoctoral Researcher in livestock transitions

Yiorgos is an Agricultural Economist and Postdoctoral Researcher working on the Wellcome Trust-funded Livestock, Environment & People (LEAP) project. His research investigates transitions of livestock production systems towards more universal sustainability with a particular focus on the development of global livestock investment models.

His current research on livestock transitions identifies productivity gains through switches to more productive systems including changes from-grass based to mixed systems. Through this work he develops a novel global livestock costing and investment model to enable agricultural intensification addressing socio-economic and biophysical functions that drive global cropland and grassland expansion. Yiorgos has extensive experience in the analysis of livestock production systems based in environmentally challenging areas as well as in the investigation of sustainability and animal welfare challenges emerging from infectious diseases.
