Improving antibiotic stewardship requires a better understanding of its long history. Reviewing 83 years of antibiotic use and regulation in global food production, a new paper by Dr Claas Kirchhelle (OMS) argues for a new and multi-pronged approach to antibiotic policy. Instead of focussing on short-term national goals, decision makers should learn from the history of policy failures and develop long-term international agreements to reform global food production, change consumer habits, and protect the antibiotic commons.
