Professor James Marrow, Co-Director of the Oxford Martin Programme in Nuclear and Energy Materials has organised the meeting in conjunction with by The Royal Academy of Engineering, The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and Institute of Physics

Summary: In the late 20th Century, the UK was a world-leader in the development of advanced nuclear fission reactor systems; these included several of what are now known as the "Generation IV" concepts.

In recent years the UK has ceased to participate actively in this research beyond keeping a watching brief - a situation that was recognised by the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology and responded to by the government with the recent Nuclear Industrial Strategy.

There is an opportunity now to change this situation, and for UK expertise in nuclear science, engineering and technology to have a significant impact. This meeting draws together experts to review the current situation and discuss how the UK could reengage in this field.

Speakers include:

  • Professor Martin Freer, Director of the Birmingham Centre for Nuclear Education and Research
  • Dr Richard Stainsby, Director of Fuel Cycle Solutions, National Nuclear Laboratory
  • Baroness Worthington, Patron of the Weinberg Foundation and Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change in the Lords
  • Dr David Powell, Vice President European Sales for GE Hitachi Nuclear Power Plants
  • Dr Harold McFarlane, Interim Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear Science and Technology, Idaho National Laboratory

Venue: Royal Academy of Engineering, Prince Philip House, 3 Carlton House Terrace, London, SW1Y 5DG
