Tracking epidemic spread is vital to public health officers and medical practitioners, who need to know where and when people are likely to be affected by an outbreak, to deploy anti-viral drugs and healthcare in the right place at the right time. Researchers studying the spread of West Nile Virus in US since 1999 suggest that birds are more likely to have been responsible for long distance spread than mosquitoes.
