This conference is hosted by the Oxford University's Ecosystems Programme at the Environmental Change Institute, the Oxford Martin School and the Oxford Centre for Tropical Forests

This three-day conference will examine the role that large animals (megafauna) play in ecosystem function, in the context of past, present and future ecosystems, ranging from the Arctic to tropical rainforests. It will explore how the extinction of megafauna in the past has altered the structure of function of ecosystems, look at the patterns and consequences of modern-day megafaunal decline, and explore the potential and controversies surrounding megafaunal rewilding.

Speakers include:

  • Professor Yadvinder Malhi, Director, Oxford Centre for Tropical Forests
  • George Monbiot, The Guardian, UK
  • Kate Lyons, Smithsonian Institution, USA
  • Adrian Lister, Natural History Museum, London, UK
  • Sergey Zimov, Pacific Institute for Geography, Russia
