13th International Metropolis Conference Mobility, Integration and Development in a Globalised World 27-31 October 2008 Bonn, Germany
The IMI convened a workshop on Immigration Experiences of Developing Countries at the 13th International Metropolis Conference: Mobility, Integration and Development in a Globalised World (27-31 October 2008, Bonn, Germany, www.metropolis2008.org).
Questions about immigration policy and immigrant integration are almost uniquely discussed in the context of migration to wealthy countries. This coincides with a relative neglect of the immigration and integration experiences of developing countries. This workshop explored how states of developing countries have developed immigration and integration policies, and compared these with policies of wealthy countries.
The presentations offered during the workshop were:
- Reflections on the immigration policies of African states, by Oliver Bakewell
- Immigration policies in South and Southeast Asia : Groping in the dark?, by Piyasiri Wickramasekara
- A look at the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa: Implications for policy and integration, by Sicel’mpilo Shange-Buthane
