Electrification is not simply about replacing fossil fuels with clean electricity. Electric technologies can deliver the same services using far less energy, creating a powerful but often overlooked benefit: electroefficiency. In this talk, Professor Jan Rosenow will explore how electroefficiency could reshape energy demand and accelerate decarbonisation, and introduce the new Oxford Martin Electrification Accelerator.

Much of the debate about the energy transition focuses on how to produce enough clean energy to replace fossil fuels. But electrification offers another fundamental advantage: it can dramatically reduce the amount of energy needed in the first place. Electric technologies such as heat pumps and electric vehicles can provide the same services using substantially less energy than the fossil-fuel technologies they replace. This combination of electrification and greater efficiency is known as electroefficiency. In this talk, Professor Jan Rosenow will explore why electroefficiency matters for the transition away from fossil fuels and what it means for the future of the energy system. He will examine the opportunities for direct electrification across buildings, transport and industry, how widespread electrification could reshape overall energy demand, and where other solutions may still be required. The talk will also consider the implications for electricity grids and infrastructure, the policy changes needed to accelerate deployment, and the barriers standing in the way of faster electrification. Professor Rosenow will also introduce the new Oxford Martin Electrification Accelerator, which he directs, and explain how it aims to bring together research, policy and practice to overcome these barriers and accelerate the transition towards a cleaner, more efficient and increasingly electric energy system.

Professor of Energy and Climate Policy, University of Oxford

Professor Jan Rosenow is a leading expert on energy and climate policy, specialising in energy efficiency, electrification and clean heat. He is Professor of Energy and Climate Policy at the University of Oxford, where he leads the Energy Programme at the Environmental Change Institute, and Director of the Oxford Martin Electrification Accelerator. He is also Jackson Senior Research Fellow at Oriel College and a Senior Associate at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Jan advises governments and international organisations, including the International Energy Agency, World Bank and World Economic Forum, and his work has helped shape energy and climate policies in the UK and internationally. He is regularly featured in international media and ranks among the top 0.2% of the world’s most cited scientists.
