With the impacts of climate change becoming ever more evident and challenging – can we “transition away from fossil fuels”, and create a new energy system which meets the many & divergent needs of the global population?

Although progress towards a new, lower carbon energy system is significant – the current pace is not enough to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Accord in an orderly fashion.  The pace will not accelerate sufficiently without intervention & international cooperation.  We should spend less time on debating the right path to Net Zero and devote our efforts to actions which immediately reduce the carbon intensity of energy consumed and which ultimately halt the net increase in man-made atmospheric CO2 in the required timeframe. These efforts will require collaboration across the world and throughout the system of energy production & consumption.

Alan Haywood
Visiting Fellow, Oxford Martin School

Alan Haywood is a Visiting Fellow in the Oxford Martin School. Specifically, he is supporting a review of the Oxford Martin Principles which, since 2018, have provided a framework for climate-conscious investment.
Recently retired after more than 35 years in the energy industry, Alan brings the perspective of a global integrated energy company. His career was grounded in commodity trading. Latterly, he worked within BP, and across the wider industry, to develop commercial choices in support of the energy transition and the evolution of lower carbon options.
