Although imaging technologies belong to the very earliest modern science, a revolution in imaging has occurred since the beginning of the 20th century. The seminar will illustrate a range of such imaging techniques with particular attention to capacities not possible before contemporary times. Implications for the sciences will be discussed in relation to the technological embodiment of science in instrumentation; the transformation of 'natural' into 'scientific' objects; and the role of critical interpretation or 'material hermeneutics' in science.
