Lucia Velasco

Lucia Velasco is a Spanish-Argentinian economist and researcher. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics, where her research explores the power dynamics between technology, economics, and society in different settings.
She is also Policy Leader Fellow at the Florence School of Transnational Governance and Aspen Fellow.
Alongside her academic pursuits, Lucia supports the United Nations Secretary-General's High-Level Advisory Body on AI, focusing on global AI governance, and serves as Co-chair of the OECD-GPAI Future of Work initiative.
Lucia began her career in the Spanish Parliament in 2004 and has held several key governmental roles, including Director of the National Observatory for Technology and Society, Member of the National Cybersecurity Council and Chief of Staff - Cabinet Director, for Spain’s Digital Agenda and National AI strategy. She later led AI policy and governance initiatives at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Geneva.
Her book, ‘Te va a sustituir un algoritmo?’, addresses the implications of AI and automation on our daily lives. Recognised by Forbes Spain as an innovative leader, Lucia serves as independent advisor to the European Commission and the Inter-American Development Bank, and regularly contributes to Spanish media outlets on topics related to the future of work and technology governance.
