Professor Alex Sutherland

Professor in Practice of Criminology & Public Policy

Alex is currently Professor in Practice of Criminology & Public Policy at the University of Oxford. 

Alongside his academic role he is a senior consultant to the Metropolitan Police Service, advisor to the Ministry of Justice and Department for Education, and is a long-standing member of the Cabinet Office / Treasury Evaluation & Trial Advice Panel. 

Alex was previously Chief Scientist and Director of Research & Evaluation at the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT). Prior to that he was Senior Research Leader, Home Affairs and Social Policy, RAND Europe where he co-led the education and criminal justice portfolios, as well as being overall lead for randomised trials. Alex previously worked as a lecturer on research methods and statistics at the University of Cambridge. Alex completed his DPhil at Nuffield College, University of Oxford.
