Raveen Kariyawasam
DPhil Student in Engineering Science
Raveen Kariyawasam is a 2022 Global Rhodes Scholar hailing from Sri Lanka. While at Oxford, he is pursuing his DPhil in Engineering Science focusing his work on the AGENDA project to develop a low cost portable EEG headset and design a novel point-of-care screening algorithm for epilepsy. His work is supervised by Prof. Timothy Denison and Prof. Arjune Sen.
Prior to Oxford, Raveen Kariyawasam obtained multiple undergraduate and graduate engineering and business degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, with a focus on computational medicine, medical devices, finance, and entrepreneurship & innovation. He specializes in brain-machine interfaces and advanced computational modeling of biological systems.
Passionate about healthcare innovation, Kariyawasam has engaged in diverse research projects, including optimizing a low-cost electronic medical record system in Sri Lanka and the Philippines to developing Augmented Reality based Surgical Planning tools. He has been awarded research grants such as the Vagelos Undergraduate Research Grant, Berkman Opportunity Fund grant, and the National Science Foundation’s Innovation Corps grant during his time at Penn.
