What is the 'trillionth tonne'?

Over the past 250 years, we’ve burnt half a trillion tonnes of fossil fuels and deposited all that CO2 into the atmosphere. At the current rate of progress, we’re set to use the next half trillion tons in about 35 years with the resultant effects on global warming and climate change. Professor Myles Allen questions where we go from here.
