UN High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development

Oct 2013

On 3 October 2013 Professor Ian Goldin spoke at the UN High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development, following the President of the General Assembly and the Secretary General. Speaking in the Opening Session of the High Level Dialogue, Professor Goldin made the case that Western, ‘developed’ states had migration to thank for many economic successes. "Steve Jobs would not have started Apple if his parents had not migrated," he cited, using the example of one of the most successful technology companies to illustrate his argument. The purpose of the High Level Dialogue is to identify concrete measures to strengthen coherence and cooperation at all levels, with a view to enhancing the benefits of international migration for migrants and countries alike and its important links to development, while reducing its negative implications. Professor Goldin's speech begins at 45 minutes and 35 seconds.
