This debate is organised by the Oxford Martin Programme on Human Rights for Future Generations
The 21st Century brings with it many challenges to the existing international human rights regime, and much effort has been dedicated to the design of a better functioning institutional framework. One radical proposal that is currently on the table is the creation of a World Court of Human Rights (WCHR). The WCHR is envisioned to have jurisdiction over various human rights treaties and it would apply to states as well as non-state actors. The court would issue legally binding judgments, and would provide restitution and compensation to victims of human rights violation.
To mark the close of the Oxford Martin School Programme on Human Rights for Future Generations, they are organising a public event on the creation of WCHR. Two world-leading experts will be invited to engage in a dialogue on the following Resolution: A World Court for Human Rights should be established to contribute to the evolution of, and compliance with, human rights law

- For the resolution: Professor Martin Scheinin, Professor of International Law and Human Rights, European University Institute
- Against the resolution: Professor Sarah H. Cleveland, Louis Henkin Professor of Human and Constitutional Rights at Columbia Law School
Moderator: Professor Harold Koh, Sterling Professor of International Law at Yale Law School
The event will end with a show of hands voting procedure in which the audience will participate
