Professor Ken Peach, Particle Therapy Cancer Research Institute

Abstract: About a third of us will get cancer sometime during our lives, and we all know of someone with the disease. Radiation therapy contributes to about 40% of the successful treatments of cancer. Using protons or light ions such as carbon (Charged Particle Therapy) offers advantages over conventional radiotherapy using x-rays since a far lower radiation dose is delivered to healthy tissue. The Particle Therapy Cancer Research Institute will study the clinical effectiveness of Charged Particle Therapy to treat cancer, and promote its use in the UK and elsewhere.
