Abstract: The surface ocean consumes about a third of the carbon we release by fossil fuel burning; will it continue to do so? The deep ocean could also consume vast amounts of carbon; should we put it there? Or should we manipulate the natural system to persuade the oceans to take up more carbon? Answering these questions might solve the global warming problem, but requires new approaches to modelling the complex circulation of ocean waters. In this seminar, we will set out the questions, and showcase the models that will answer them.
