James Martin Research Fellow, Dr. Nim Pathy, was recently invited to the House of Lords to give evidence to the Select Committee on Science and Technology. The Institute for Emerging Infections has been conducting research into pandemic strains of influenza, a major area of interest for the committee.
On 4 February, the Select Committee on Science and Technology invited six pandemic influenza experts to advise them on various elements of preparedness, ranging from the possibility of a vaccine, to the state of planning for critical care. Dr Pathy gave evidence on the evolution of pandemic strains of influenza, as well as possible ‘warning signs’ (patterns of infection) that may arise in the weeks or months before an outbreak.
