Matthias Wildemeersch is a Senior Research Associate for the Oxford Martin Programme on Systemic Resilience and the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford.
He uses a mix of quantitative methods to answer research questions dealing with socio-ecological systems, working at the intersection of risk, resilience, collective action, and sustainable development. The first pillar of his work concerns decisions under uncertainty. He uses stochastic optimisation and robust decision making to define policies that perform well under different potential futures. He applies these tools in the context of food systems and environmental protection. The second pillar of Matthias' research addresses collective actions problems, and studies the role of preferences, norms, and social psychology in dealing with social dilemmas. He uses network theory and evolutionary games in problems of climate risk management and water governance.
Matthias holds a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science from the University of Twente, the Netherlands (2013). Prior to joining ECI, he gained professional experience through different research positions at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in Singapore, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. As a Research Scholar, he maintains an active collaboration with IIASA.
