Jim Hall David Pyle RS Fellowship
Professors Jim Hall and David Pyle have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society, among eight Oxford academics recognised for their outstanding contributions to science

The Royal Society, UK’s national academy of science, has released its latest cohort of elected scientists that will join their prestigious Fellowship. The list features over 90 researchers from across the world representing a wide range of disciplines, from artificial intelligence to neuroscience.

Professor Jim Hall is Professor of Climate and Environmental Risks at the School of Geography and the Environment and a Director of the Oxford Martin Systemic Resilience Initiative as well as being involved in several other programmes at the School. His research has shaped national and global approaches to climate adaptation, infrastructure resilience, and water resource management, and he has held key advisory roles including on the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology and the National Infrastructure Commission.

He said: 'I’m honoured to be in the company of such great scientists, both the current generation of Fellows of the Royal Society, and the giants of previous generations upon whose shoulders we stand.’

Professor David Pyle is Professor of Earth Sciences at the Department of Earth Sciences and Director of the Oxford Martin Programme on Rethinking Natural Resources. His research spans the historical and geological record of eruptions and investigates volcanic risk in regions like the Ethiopian Rift Valley. His work also feeds into interdisciplinary efforts to re-evaluate how natural resources are understood and managed in the Eastern Caribbean.

He said: 'I am delighted and honoured to receive this recognition, which owes so much to the support I have had from so many talented and creative colleagues, collaborators and students both in Oxford, and around the world, over many years.'
